Skiing is my PASSION and athletics have been in my life for 42 years! My soon-to-be-released 12-Week PEAK Ski Conditioning Program is my dream “marriage” of my 20 year career, in the fitness industry, and my love I’ve had for skiing since the age of three.
For those of you who do not know me, I am Jennifer Lockwood. I’m the owner of PEAK fitness NW (Portland, OR), 20 year Personal Trainer with an Exercise & Sports Science degree from Oregon State University, wife for 12 years and mother of two beautiful boys, Kegan and Kellan. I began skiing when I was three with my family in the Northwest – small resorts like Spout Springs (Milton-Freewater,Oregon), Mission Ridge (Wenatchee, WA), Bluewood (WA) and my favorite to this day – Stevens Pass, WA. It has been 40 years (WOW!) since that first day on the snow with my Dad.
Twenty years ago, as a fresh college graduate, I got back on the slopes and renewed my interest in skiing and began skiing much more frequently, challenging myself on expert terrain, bigger mountains and skiing with friends much better than me. At the same time, a 14-year-old ski racer and myself started my first Ski Conditioning class, in an athletic club setting. I’ve continued to offer this program for 20 years! Now, we take advantage of the beautiful outdoor environment in the Pacific Northwest and offer this program outdoors!
Ten years ago, I blended my love for skiing and experience of coaching, training and instructing fitness clients by becoming a ski instructor at Mt. Hood Meadows. Since that time I “breathe” skiing fall, winter, spring….and even into the summer months. In the fall, dryland ski conditioning classes begin, October brings on the start of educational ski instruction training (ski video movement analysis sessions, workshops, etc), November kicks off the on-snow ski instruction training and Thanksgiving through early May the ski season is in full swing! It doesn’t end in May, we roll over to summer skiing on the Palmer Snowfield, located on the flanks of Mt. Hood, Oregon at Timberline Ski Resort into early August.
All of these months spent on the snow – PLAYING, instructing, and training with some of the best skiers and coaches in the Northwest have allowed me to fine-tune both my skiing, becoming a PSIA-NW (Professional Ski Instructor of America – Northwest Division) Level III Alpine Ski Instructor and dryland ski conditioning program. Incorporating athletic conditioning components – aerobic, anaerobic, strength, quickness, agility, power, balance and range of motion training while introducing the fundamental skiing movements of balancing, edging, rotary and pressure-control into all sessions. One of my greatest testimonials came from a client who after her first day on the snow after participating in ski conditioning workouts throughout the fall said “Jenn, I skied my first day this past weekend and I had one of my best days EVER on the slopes. I had no idea that the exercises we did in class would actually improve my skiing technique on the snow!”
It has been my goal as a fitness trainer to provide time efficient and effective fitness programs to allow my clients to better enjoy their passions in life. Athletic conditioning was essential for that 14-year old ski racer to improve his performance on the race course as it has been for myself and the many other recreational skiers, racers, and ski teaching professionals that I’ve trained over the years. The specific training that has been offered in my PEAK fitness NW Ski Conditioning classes and the soon-to-be released PEAK Ski Conditioning program has allowed my clients to:
- Ski harder.
- Ski longer.
- Reduced the risk of injuries.
- Have their BEST ski season EVER!
My goal with the soon-to-be-released PEAK Ski Conditioning Program is to offer a time efficient and effective, ski-specific, athletic conditioning program that will eliminate your excuses of missing your workouts and will enable you to SHRED the mountain your first day instead of the mountain shredding you!
